UV reverse matte finishing—with its sleek, muted, high-end texture—is a favorite among designers. But why do printed results often fall short of expectations after sending files to the press? The issue typically stems from pre-press oversights.
Core: Spot Color Channel
Avoid using regular layers. Instead, create a dedicated spot color channel in Photoshop and name it UV_Matt_[Pantone Number]. This serves as a clear, unambiguous instruction for the printing press.
Screen Ruling is the Foundation
If the screen ruling is too high (e.g., >200 lpi), the matte ink won’t spread evenly, resulting in a pale, flat finish with no depth. Our tests confirm the optimal range is 175–200 lpi. Fix the screen angle at 45° to effectively eliminate unsightly moiré patterns caused by overlapping with CMYK printing.
Ink & Curing Parameters
Mix matte ink and base coat at a 1:0.8 ratio to ensure strong adhesion and the desired matte effect. Curing energy is critical: too low (<1200 mJ/cm²) leads to incomplete drying, while too high (>1500 mJ/cm²) may cause excessive glossiness. A matte finish is only acceptable if it measures ≤15 GU when tested with a 60° gloss meter.
Registration & Final Checks
If foil stamping is included, ensure the registration tolerance is ≤0.15 mm—otherwise, edges will appear blurry. Final critical check: Is the spot color channel set to "Overprint"? Without this setting, harsh white light from underlying layers may show through on the finished product.
